    Circle or Square equals earth

    A quick question, I hope, I always thought the circle in the square represented earth and heaven. Earth represented by the circle and heaven by the square. But I have done some research and it seems its the other way round. 

     

    The circle is heaven surrounded by earth represented by the square.

     

    Can anyone put me straight?

    That makes sense, its a dome not just a flat circle, so its the dome of heaven or the sky. The land is like a chess board, made/altered by man
